 Fingers: Mini Games:

Introduction:

"Fingers," also known as "finger spoof," is a drinking game where participants make predictions about the number of players who will keep their finger on a cup at the conclusion of a countdown. A correct guess allows the player to avoid drinking from the cup and eliminates them from the game. The last person remaining in the game is the loser and must consume the contents of the cup. The cup used can be a pint glass, pitcher, or any suitable vessel capable of accommodating all players with one finger on the rim, and it is filled with a small amount of each player's drink before the game begins.

The game typically begins with a participant offering their empty or nearly empty pint glass, pitcher, or similar container to be used as "the cup." Commonly referred to as "Scoff" in some circles, the game commences when someone shouts "Scoff!" and players gather around the cup. Each player pours a small portion of their own drink into "the cup" to contribute to its contents.

The game proceeds in a series of turns, with the player who suggested the game having the first turn. Each turn starts with all players placing one finger on the rim of the cup. Once all fingers are on the rim, the player whose turn it is counts down, saying "three - two - one," followed by announcing a number. This number represents their guess for how many fingers will remain on the cup after the countdown. All participants, including the player taking the turn, can choose to keep their finger on the cup or remove it after the countdown. A correct guess results in the player's elimination from the game (a win), while an incorrect guess keeps them actively participating.

The game proceeds clockwise as each player takes their turn. The game concludes when only one person remains—the loser—and that person must consume the contents of the cup. If the game is played again, the loser initiates the next round.

Variations of Fingers:

  1. Two-man Fingers: Played with only 2 players, each using both index fingers (4 fingers total) to start the game. The game proceeds as if 4 individuals were playing.
  2. Balk: Occurs when a player begins the countdown but fails to announce their guess number promptly or doesn't announce it at all. The player forfeits their turn if a balk occurs.
  3. Slow Pull: When a participant removes their finger from the cup slowly or decides to do so late (within a second). It's generally considered fair unless done unreasonably or with fewer than 3-4 players remaining.
  4. Social: When all players coincidentally remove their finger during a call, resulting in each player taking a sip of their own drink.
  5. Non-Celebration for the Truly Advanced: If a player guesses correctly and eliminates themselves, they must refrain from displaying any celebratory emotions that might offend other participants (e.g., celebrating, fist-pumping, smiling). If they do, they must apologize to the remaining players and rejoin the game.
  6. Idiot Cup: When a player calls out a number but makes it impossible to achieve through their own action (e.g., calling 0 while leaving their finger on the cup or calling 5 with only 4 players left), they must finish the drink as a penalty.
  7. Penalty: If a player calls a number out of turn, they must consume their drink as a penalty.
  8. Finger Spoof Variations: Traditional variations of this game are played in pubs and sports clubs in Gloucestershire and involve different forfeits or penalties, such as buying a round of drinks or consuming unusual substances like snuff or mustard.

In this game, participants need to be attentive and make accurate predictions to avoid being the loser who must drink from the cup.
